The MIT Technique means choosing the most important task of the day and making it your first priority. To do this, you just need to ask yourself one simple question – “What is my most important task for today?” Once you know the answer, make that task your goal for the day and commit to finishing it no matter what. This becomes a personal commitment to yourself.
The biggest advantage of MIT is that it gives you a clear focus. When you have too many tasks, you often complete the smaller ones but postpone the real important ones. But if you already have your MIT decided, your attention stays on that task, helping you avoid distractions and work more productively.
The best way to practice this technique is to decide your MIT the night before and complete it as early as possible in the morning. The MIT doesn’t always have to be a big project. It can be anything, like completing a college assignment, making an important client call, preparing a sales presentation, or even getting your vehicle serviced. Once the task is done, you will feel a sense of satisfaction and energy, which will help you prioritize and complete the rest of your tasks easily.
As you continue this habit for a few days, you can gradually upgrade it. In the beginning, just choose one MIT, but later you can move on to 2–3 MITs (Most Important Tasks) per day. Make sure the list is manageable, otherwise, this whole practice becomes ineffective. Experts suggest that you should not have more than three MITs in a day, and at least one of them should be aligned with your long-term goals.
